In support documents published secretly, Microsoft stated that Windows would continue to support popular codecs such as FLAC or ALAC but the “AC-3 codec” will no longer be included starting with Windows 11 version 24H2.
AC-3 codec himself may be known as Dolby Digitaland with the removal of this codec in Windows 11 24H2, users who try to play audio encoded in the AC-3 codec using built-in applications such as Windows 11 Media Player, the audio will no longer be able to be played.
However, this change will not affect third party media players like VLC or others and only affects the media player built into the Windows 11 system.
On versions of Windows prior to Windows 11, version 24H2, the AC-3 codec is included. Beginning with Windows 11, version 24H2, the AC-3 codec is no longer included with Windows,
Microsoft said
Codec support that Microsoft will still support
Due to the removal of AC-3 codec support, now there are only a few popular codecs that are still supported by Microsoft, including:
Audio Codecs | Video Codecs |
---|---|
Advanced Audio Coding (AAC, M4A) | MPEG-4, H.264 |
Free Lossless Audio Codec (FLAC) | P.263 |
MPEG-1, MPEG-2 audio (eg, MP3, MP2) | VP8 |
Apple Lossless Audio Codec (ALAC) | Motion JPEG |
Waveform (WAV) | DV |
Windows Media Audio (WMA) | VC-1 |
3GP, 3G2 | Windows Media Video (WMV) |
Adaptive Multi-Rate (AMR) |
So, if you want to play media that is not listed in the table above, you must use another media player such as VLC, MPV and K-Lite Codec Pack which of course supports almost all media formats and codecs.
