Using a Microsoft account in Windows 11 does seem to have become mandatory, apart from the option of creating a local account having been removed (except with the bypass trick), there are many Windows 11 features that require users to log in with an MSA / Microsoft Account.
Examples include OneDrive, Windows Backups, even Paint Creator which also requires users to log in with an MSA account.
Well even though users don’t like it and even Elon Musk himself has criticized the use of MSA in the Windows 11 Setup processIn fact, Microsoft continues to try to convince users to switch from local accounts to Microsoft Accounts. In fact, they recently released it support page which explains why users need to switch.
The main difference between a local account and a Microsoft account is that a local account is specific to one device, whereas a Microsoft account can be used across multiple devices and Microsoft services.

The following is the explanation stated by Microsoft on its support page.
- Local accounts are created on the device and do not require Internet connectivity to log in. This account is independent of other services, and is not connected to the cloud. With that, all your settings, files and applications are limited to that one device.
- Microsoft accounts, on the other hand, are associated with the email addresses and passwords you use which include Outlook.com, Hotmail, Office, OneDrive, Skype, Xbox, and Windows. When you sign in to your PC with a Microsoft account, you’re connected to Microsoft’s cloud services, and your settings and files can be synced across devices. You can also use it to access other Microsoft services.
On the support page, Microsoft also explains detailed steps on how to switch from a local account to a Microsoft account, and vice versa.
But what is certain is that in general a Microsoft account is useful, especially if you work with many other Microsoft services, but if you are not a Microsoft service user, actually using a local account is not a problem.
