YouTube is currently apparently testing a new feature in the form of “Notes” which will allow users to add notes and provide more context and information below the video.
At first glance, this Notes feature has a similar concept to Community Notes on X (formerly Twitter), where it can be used to explain various things to enrich the context of the video.
Regarding this, YouTube explain that they will use a “bridging-based algorithm” to determine whether a record is worth publishing:
A bridging-based algorithm helps identify notes that are helpful to a broad audience across perspectives. If many people who have rated notes differently in the past now rate the same note as helpful, then our system is more likely to show that note under a video. These systems will continuously improve as more notes are written and rated across a broad range of topics.
YouTube will ask users whether a note is “helpful”, “somewhat helpful”, or “not helpful”, and considers factors such as whether the note cites high-quality sources or is written in a neutral tone.
Additionally, for can write Notes on YouTube, users must have a YouTube channel that is more than six months old and no community guidelines strikes in the last twelve months. And while this feature requires users to rate video notes over the long term, third-party evaluators will assess the usefulness of notes over time pilot program and helped train YouTube’s systems.
BTW, this Notes feature will be available in the United States starting in the next few weeks or months, while global availability has not yet been confirmed.
