Several months ago news emerged that Windows 11 Will Get Super Resolution Feature which was then finally revealed that this feature will be exclusive for Snapdragon X users only.

Now regarding this, Microsoft has shared further details regarding the Automatic Super Resolution / AutoSR feature for some time, in the official pageMicrosoft stated:

Auto SR stands out in two interesting ways: it applies automatically and it enhances existing games. Like other SR technologies, Auto SR uses AI to improve frame rates and image quality. However, Auto SR focuses on bringing the benefits of super resolution to your existing game library without requiring manual configuration. This makes it ideal for players who prefer a simple experience. Just start your game, and Auto SR instantly enhances it, letting you easily enjoy visuals that surpass native 1080p quality with fast frame rates typically seen at lower resolutions.

So, as stated by Microsoft, the AutoSR they are developing will use AI so it requires a Neural Processing Unit, which is why only Copilot+ PC devices will get this feature.

Additionally, Microsoft says its approach to AutoSR is different from the AI ​​game enhancement features available from Nvidia’s DLSS Super Resolution, AMD’s FidelityFX Super Resolution, and Intel’s XeSS.

This approach requires the game to change its rendering, for example by using jitter and MIP bias to add finer details. Instead, Auto SR handles the task of perfecting the game without any additional information to perfect the game as it currently exists. It relies on a larger model and NPU to create stunning visuals.

And as in the example image above, it shows that the game runs normally at 1440p resolution with 24 frames per second, besides that the game also runs at 720p resolution but with the Auto SR feature activated and at 40 frames per second, both look identical even though they have quality bases very different resolution.

Microsoft admits that using Auto SR in games can create “some softening of text and HUD elements” that’s why users won’t see this technology used in games that have a lot of text. So, Copilot+ device users can activate or deactivate AutoSR, or adjust it for each game they want to play.

And the good news, in the future Microsoft will add improvements to AutoSR and its games with additional resolution options, multi-monitor support and HDR content. That’s great.

In general, with AutoSR you will experience gaming with improved quality, and as in the example image above, 720p resolution is able to match 1440p quality thanks to AutoSR. Interesting right?
